Seagulls Get Wins Over Phins in Rivalry Round

A huge crowd flocked to BMD Kougari Oval yesterday afternoon to witness one of the best rivalries the Queensland Rugby League competitions have to offer.

It was the battle of the Bayside teams, as the Redcliffe Dolphins made the trip to Wynnum Manly for Hastings Deering Colts and Hostplus Cup matches.

Redcliffe had only lost once this season in the Colts competition, but started slowly, with the Seagulls scoring from their firs set. The home team’s momentum continued throughout the first half as we took a 28-6 lead into the break.

Redcliffe then put on 4 tries in 12 minutes to get within 2 points of the Seagulls, before Tyree Bowman extended the Seagulls lead to 34-26.

Our Gulls held on to win 34-30 in a thrilling win against a very good team.

The Hostplus Cup match was up next, broadcast on Kayo and 9Now, where Wynnum Manly were buoyed by the inclusions of Jock Madden and Xavier Willison (Broncos contracted players from Norths), and Gerard Beale (signed mid-week) on Old Boys Day at home.

This time it was Redcliffe with the hot start as they broke out to a 16-0 lead after 24 minutes.

The BMD Kougari Oval home crowd was willing the Seagulls on to get back into the match, and they replied through Gideon Gela Mosby in the 28th minute.

4 minutes later, Josh Rogers scored under the posts from a Jock Madden grubber kick. Before Deine Mariner made a 55m jinking run off the ensuing restart set to tie the game at 16-16.

The Dolphins scored twice after halftime to restore their 10 point lead, with under 20 minutes to go.

Jock Madden stood up again as he put Josh Rogers through a gap and backed up to collect the return pass and score under the posts.

Captain Luke Gale then tied the game in the 73rd minute when Madden passed inside to Kalolo Saitaua, who then reversed back inside to put Gale under the posts.

The Seagulls hit the front with Josh Rogers converted the try, their first time in the lead all game.

28-26 was enough for the Seagulls to hold on and seal our 6th win in a row.

Thank you to all Seagulls fans who came out to BMD Kougari Oval and cheered our boys on. Your support is very much appreciated.

Both Seagulls teams have earned their bye this weekend, before the Hostplus Cup team make the trip to Cairns on Saturday 8 July.
